- the making of...CS_wallstreet:

This was my first Counter Strike map and specially the first time i worked with the quake2 engine. I had to rethink some of the parts because of the limits but i ended learning a few things.

The cool thing about CS maps is that they are based on real locations or places that could exist. I wanted to make a map where you could visit some famous place and have fun there.

I had some clear things in my mind. I wanted it to be a CS where you had to rescue people, i wanted it to have an outdoors area and an indoors area. I also wanted Counter Terrorist to approach the building hiding behind cars and giving terrorist nice sniping positions.

I wanted to create the atmosphere of movies where the good guys get out of the van and run to save the hostages. After searching for a nice real location i found that wallstreet was perfect.

Here are the steps:

I have never been to New York and didnt have idea how the streets were connected etc so the first thing i did was look for all the pictures i could find. ( Thanks "Dertrieb" for the link to images.google.com)

As usual the first things you find are tourist pictures. It is ok because they dont compress them and they are usually huge. Also you can get some "bad shots" that show you more than proffessional photographs. Here you can see a cute japanese girl.

It is amazing how many old photographs you can find. At first it was fun but after a while i was sick of black and white pictures.

With these pictures i started to have an idea of how everything looked. There is the New York Stock Exchange at the top, Morgan Bank to the left and the small roof if general plaza where a George Washington statue stands.

I love this picture.

More photos from my wallstreet gallery ;)

yes, all very nice but I STILL didnt have any photos to use as textures. Thanks god corbis.com exists. They use waterwarks so i had to use the "free parts" of the image and make seamless textures with the bits i could use.

These are some more pictures i used as textures. As you can see they suck but when they are the only thing you have... For the first one i had to make it "colour" so that it matched the surrounding buildings. For the second one...well i had to spend some time with it because it´s really bad. I used the building with the columns and made a seamless pattern with that area.

The asphalt wasn´t a problem because there are thousands of textures already made.

Well, you think...where is the map? I had a problem; with all those pictures i still didnt have an idea of how everything looked. It is difficult when you have never been there. Try to figure out, you have NYSE, the statue, but what about that building in the corner? Then you see those old photos and you are totally confused.

But then all my problems were solved in a second....
